Cultivating Everyday Futuring — Scott Smith

People are waiting for the future to playout, they don't actively get involved in dictating that future

Sense-making: the act of determining what's what

How can society cultivate habits of everyday futuring? Or taking a longer view? We need a vocab and a structure

'These things I know, these things I don't' to begin

Short-term thinkers are often autocrats (e.g. Trump, Bolsonaro, Putin)

Systems-based thinking is essential (e.g. with problems like the climate crisis), but avoid theories that simplify complex systems

Insurance companies are deep into understanding economic change of systems with things like CC. E.g. insurance going up in Ohio to pay for flood risk in Mississippi
