Design: Cultural Probes — Gaver, Dunne & Pacenti

Lead the audience towards more unexpected answers and new areas for discussion. Allow plenty of room for response.

Aim for informal and friendly communication, try to appeal personally. E.g a printed letter seems more pushy than a written one.

No time pressure.

Aesthetics as a 'right' with the purpose of functionality, rather than to appeal or motivate.

The probes should be "only partly guided by any “objective” problem statement. Thus we were after “inspirational data” with the probes, to stimulate our imaginations rather than define a set of problems."

Cultural probes can allow for the problem of distance, as well as create a more friendly and equal relationship between designer and user.
