Nowtopia — Chris Carlsson (talk)

Working class to Carlsson is anyone who gets up and goes to work everyday to “reproduce this world”, without having a say in what or why we do it (“a separation of execution from responsibility”). Nowtopia talks about the people who have found agency outside of their work.

Political agency has changed from what we do in our work, to now what we do outside our work (this includes what we can buy).

If ecological prosperity and equitable living were the priorities of the world then this could be the case, instead we perpetuate the systems in place by getting up everyday and being a part of them (e.g capitalism).

The internet is an example of a place in which much of it’s making has been free and open-source, it is abundant.

The gardening movement represents the reclaiming of the commons. By the end of WW2, 45% of fresh produce consumed by Americans was grown in urban gardens, this was many people’s way of contributing to the war effort.

Help each other ‘steal time’, someone working 3 jobs to get by is unlikely to have time to make ‘better’ decisions as Carlsson calls it. We can help each other ’steal time’ by creating new systems that are open and available for all to take advantage of.

Interventions change people’s imaginations.

DIY isn’t just fixing something yourself. Women’s health clinics we see now came from the acceptance in the 60s that modern medicine was not paying enough attention to women’s health needs. These specialised clinics are the people who fought for reproductive rights, abortion rights, etc.
